Each man is good in His sight. It is not necessary for eagles to be crows.
Sitting Bull

A great leader of the Lakota people was assasinated 117 years ago today. Sitting Bull, Tatanka Iyotanka was murdered  as he was being arrested by tribal police at the Standing Rock reservation December 15, 1890. The white agents and government officials wished to make an example of him, thinking this would persuade those participating in the Ghost Dance to cease and desist.

The massacre at Wounded Knee would eventually accomplish that goal, two weeks after Sitting’s Bull’s murder.

Going into an election year, I would hope that people remember this man who put the needs of his tribe before his own. He was generous, humble, compassionate, and fearless. He was also an astute leader, clear and lucid about the impact of white settlers on tribals lands, and the motives of the US government.

In memory of Tatanka Iyotanka, I pray that there is somewhere in the quantum fabric where the Lakota have triumphed and Sitting Bull died of old age, and that this reality and that reality converge in satisfying resolution for everyone.

Aho! Mitakue Oyasin. All my relations.
